Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) has a tough road ahead. Two obstacles face this emerging league: no Mia Hamm and the worst economic situation since the Great Depression.
However, all is not lost. There is hope that WPS will succeed and become the elite league for women’s soccer in the entire world.
Los Angles Sol Head Coach Abner Rogers lends his expertise to this issue. Rogers adamantly believes the league will survive and prosper because of four core qualities:
First, there are no huge salaries. The average player might only make $32,000 and might have to find another job just to make ends meet. Second, all of the players want it to work. They do not want to see the failure of another professional women’s soccer league here in the U.S. Third, Rogers suggests that most would play for free if they had to. They have a love and passion for the game that is contagious. Fourth, ticket prices are incredibly reasonable. You can actually get a ticket to a game for about $10. You definitely won’t find that anywhere else.
