Mount Union’s women’s soccer team scored a 2-0 shutout over tournament host Fredonia (N.Y.) to win the championship of the Blue Devil Clarion Classic Saturday in Fredonia, N.Y.
Mount Union (3-0) stayed undefeated on the season behind the play of tournament MVP in senior goalkeeper Maria Favorite. Fredonia (1-3) outshot the Purple Raiders, 22-9, but could not get one past Favorite, who had nine saves while posting her first shutout of the season.
The game was scoreless until the 82nd minute when a scramble for the ball in front of the Fredonia goal turned into a goal for the Raiders from senior Jessica Finkler.
A little less than two minutes later, a pair of sophomores got to together on a Mount Union goal as Amanda Davies sent a through ball to Carolyn Balzano for the 2-0 final.
Mount Union returns home to face Penn State-Behrend next Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
