In a disappointing display of teamwork and passing, the Seattle Sounders fell to 2-1-0 on the season following a 1-0 home loss to San Jose. The only goal came after San Jose’s Steven Lenhart was arguably fouled in the box by a Seattle defender. The goal officially goes to Chris Wondolowski on the PK. The Sounders struggled to string together many passes, often kicking wildly or lofting through balls out of play. Much of the match took place in the air, as aerial battles waged on for the ninety. San Jose came out on top both in terms of high flying and ground possession.
The loss for the Sounders did not come without an army of shots, many of which flew feet wide of the post. Several headers, namely from Fredy Montero, had the crowd on their feet and jeering.
Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning had a multitude of saves on the night. If not for his tenacity and key blocks, the score would have been much more lopsided. He tallied nearly a dozen saves on the night.
Next week, the Sounders travel to the nation’s capital to face off against D.C. United. Hopefully, they get some rest and play more accurately on Saturday. Coverage will be provided KONG/KOMO2 beginning at 4:30 p.m. Seattle has the potential to break into the upper tier early and build momentum. The beginning of a season is crucial for morale going forward.
