Zombie Nation Awakes (Review)

Editor August 16, 2016

All of us at ISN are big supporters of the Welsh game from the national team to the Welsh Premier League.

We’ve reviewed loads of titles related to Welsh football, but feel that we found something really special with Bryn Law’s Zombie Nation Awakes – Welsh Football’s Odyssey to Euro 2016: The Diary of a Reporter Supporter.

Law offers something truly unique when it comes to the Wales national team and that is a new perspective, a “behind the scenes” look at the team.  Law’s style is truly conversational and it reveals a lot about the business of journalism, football, and fandom.  The author is, after all, a highly respected journalist and broadcaster, a football expert, and a passionate supporter of Wales football.

Readers are treated to a wonderful recap of Wales’ entire Euro 2016 qualification campaign, a journey Law covered for the one and only Sky Sports.  The lens of this recap is incredibly unique as the readers see what it’s really like to be a reporter and broadcaster covering a major national team.  Law is quite possibly the world’s leading authority on the Wales national team and he shares his extensive knowledge of the players and management team with his readers.

The fact that Law is highly respected and trusted is shown with a foreword from Gary Speed’s father and a preface from current national team manager Chris Coleman.  Those are two of the biggest names in the Welsh game and both speak to the importance of this text.  Law captures every possible emotion associated with this national team: disappointment, despair, and pure jubilation.

Simply put, Zombie Nation Awakes is one of the finest titles ever written on the subject of Wales football.  Hopefully we’ll see another title from the partnership of Law and St. David’s Press in the future.

ISBS is the exclusive distributor of this St. David’s Press title in the United States.
