Mount Union’s men’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 non-conference contest to Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) in the home opener Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.

The game’s only goal game just under three minutes before halftime when Purple Raider keeper Dylan Lias (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) got tied up with Carnegie Mellon midfielder Zack Masciopinto resulting in a yellow card on Lias. Masciopinto scored on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead.

Carnegie Mellon (2-0) held a 6-0 shot advantage at halftime as Lias kept the Raiders in the game with four of his seven saves in the first period.

Mount Union picked up its offensive intensity in the second half to out-shoot the Tartans 4-3 but keeper Jack Sampiere was up to the task with a pair of saves to get his first shutout of the season.

Mount Union, now 0-2 on the season, stays home to host Wooster in a non-conference game Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
