The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is proud to announce Midland-Odessa Sockers FC forward Julio Vargas Luna as the sixth NPSL National Player of the Week for the 2019 season.
“It’s been an honor playing for the Sockers and for this coaching staff,” Luna said. “All of the credit for this goes to my teammates that helped me earn this award.”
Luna registered four goals and one assist in two wins over Laredo and Katy.
“Julio came to our club and made an immediate impact,” Midland-Odessa Sockers FC head coach Johnny Clifford said. “He has worked hard and has taken his chances when they came. He is a guy who I believe has next level quality and I’m excited to see what else he can produce the rest of this season.”
The Dallas, TX native went to J.J. Pearce High School and played for both Solar Chelsea and Andromeda club teams as a youth. Luna first attended the University of Memphis, playing there for two seasons. He made 31 appearances for the Tigers, tallying three goals and one assist. He then went to West Texas A&M for two seasons. He scored nine goals and had four assists for a total of 22 points in 2017. His production increased in 2018 to 14 goals and nine assists for a total of 37 points.
Luna played in three games (two starts) for the Sockers in 2019, tallying five goals and one assist over 204 minutes of play.
The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country.
