Notre Dame College took down Mount St. Mary’s University 71-5, at home, on Saturday afternoon as they kicked off their first game of the season and their first contest as a part of the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA).

Notre Dame picked up right where they left off in 2016 when they put together an 8-3 record and became the national runner-up. Coming into the 2017 season, NDC was voted sixth in the NIRA preseason poll, while Mount St. Mary’s was picked fifteenth.

Head coach Luke Markovich was very happy with how the women’s team responded to their trainings over the last two weeks.

“We had a significant amount of housekeeping to take care of during preseason and the ladies were resilient in accomplishing their tasks,” he said.

On the field they have adapted and taken to the new system of play and it started to show on Saturday. The Falcons started by receiving a kick-off and moving the ball through the hands, resulting in a try eight seconds into the game. Notre Dame then took command of the game. Mount St. Mary’s did fight back and forced penalties and errors, leading to a 20 minute scoreless period and a well-deserved try in the second half.

“It’s encouraging to see the discipline and organization being taken from the practice field to the pitch,” Markovich said. “It’s a great start to the season but we still have a lot to learn and accomplish.”

The Falcons will take on Davenport University, at home, on September 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
