Sheffield Wednesday FC: The Official History 1867-2017 (Review)

Editor November 15, 2018

Sheffield Wednesday FC is a club with some serious history, 151 years to be exact.

A lot has happened in that time period.  Two world wars, the invention of the automobile, the Great Depression, a moon landing, and the invention of the computer and the internet to name a few.  A lot of ups and downs were seen in history and much the same happened in the beautiful game.  Teams came to life, teams folded, and the game changed thanks to professionalism and worldwide interest in the Premier League, Champions League, and the World Cup.  Footballers went from part-time players to multi-millionaires and global icons.

Jason Dickinson’s Sheffield Wednesday FC: The Official History 1867-2017 captures literally everything about Wednesday’s history in 368 pages.  You will hear about promotion, relegation, crowds big and small, budget signings, millionaire busts, and everything in between.

Despite a journey that resembled that of a roller coaster, Wednesday has remained steadfast and dependable, a club that you can always depend on.  Over 1,000 players have donned the club’s colors and crest in nearly 5,000 matches and while they have come and gone, the club remained.   This is a club that came from very humble beginnings and today is known as one of the oldest and most respected in the world.

There are plenty of stories about Wednesday to tell and Amberley Publishing and Jason Dickinson are the right pairing to tell them the right way.  Amberley are arguably the world leaders when it comes to football history, while Dickinson has written multiple books about the club and is the foremost expert on the subject.

This book is an absolute must for any Sheffield Wednesday fan, but it is also a no-brainer for English football fans and football history buffs as it offers so much to the conversation.  It’s a great read from start to finish; the pages fly by just like the years have at Wednesday.
